SIMPLE REALISATION

Environmental professionals were spending too much time searching for data and not enough time solving problems

The foundations of Lotsearch were laid long before the company existed. In 2001, Howard and Pete, both fresh geography graduates, joined Landmark Information Group, the UK’s leading provider of environmental risk and planning intelligence.

Sourcing, extracting and mapping information from multiple disparate sources including historical maps and documents helped to create a one-stop-shop for key information helping to transform decision-making. With legacy contamination issues being so prevelant in the UK due to their rich history of industrialisation and mining, it really helped clients to understand the past land use and bring this into focus.

After leaving Landmark and eventually moving to Australia in the mid-late 2000s, they noticed something critical: Australia didn’t have a Landmark equivalent. No provider offered the same depth of environmental intelligence, historical mapping expertise, or structured risk analysis.

That gap sparked the idea that became Lotsearch.

In June 2014, they launched the business sharing an office with a mining consultancy where Pete had once worked. By August, they were building the first components of what would become Lotsearch’s national database, sourcing datasets, historic maps, and aerial imagery for NSW.

Today, Lotsearch remains proudly independent, proudly Australian, and committed to one purpose: a more environmentally aware Australia.
